My name is Chelsea Chowderhead. A chowder2) is a stew3) made out of thick soup. My father says that our early ancestors may have invented chowder. I wonder if our early ancestors got made fun of all the time, too. For me, the last name teasing4) began as soon as I started school. So when my family moved to South Carolina, I decided that it was my chance for a fresh start. I asked my dad if I could change my name.

“But the Chowderhead name has a long history—” Dad started.

“I know, I know. We were makers of thick soups or stews.”

“Why do you want to change it?” He asked. My dad always asks lots of questions.

I didn’t want to hurt his feelings, but I didn’t want to go through another school year as a Chowderhead, either. “I get teased all the time. Even a compliment like ‘Good idea, Chowderhead’ sounds mean.”

“I know it’s not always easy being a Chowderhead,” said Dad. “I’ve been a Chowderhead my whole life, and I’ve been teased a lot. But you shouldn’t change who you are. Let people get to know you first and your name later.”

“How can people get to know me before they know my name?” I asked.

He said, &ldquo,中英翻譯;Ask good questions.”

I looked at him blankly. He went on, “When you meet someone new, ask them a question. It can’t be a mean question, and it has to be something that you’re really curious about. Once people start talking about themselves, they don’t judge you. They’re just happy that someone is interested in what they have to say.”

Two days later I headed to my new school for the first day of class. As soon as I got to my classroom, a girl named Claire introduced herself. I noticed that Claire was wearing pretty woven bracelets5). I asked her where she got them. Her face lit up, and she explained that she made them herself. She’d gotten a bracelet-making kit for her birthday, and these were her first try. She offered to make me one.

By lunch, I’d talked to lots of people and was getting the hang of6) finding the right question. But there were two kids, twin brothers, who didn’t seem to talk to anyone but each other. When they looked at me, I felt as if they already knew that I was a Chowderhead. Still, my dad’s advice had worked out well, so I decided to give it one more try. I asked Claire if we should sit with the twins. She looked a little surprised, but shrugged her shoulders and followed me.

“Do you mind if we sit with you?” I asked. The twins stared at us. I sat down and opened my milk. No one said anything. I realized that if the twins never said anything, I’d never think of a question. Claire didn’t say anything, either. I looked at their lunches for some kind of clue and noticed that the lunchboxes were identical7). That’s when it came to me.

“What’s it like being a twin?” I asked.

The twins looked astonished. Then they both started talking at the same time.

“No one has ever asked us that!” one said.

“Most of the time it’s good,” the other said. It turns out that being a twin is as complicated as being a Chowderhead. When you’re a twin you always have someone to talk to and have lunch with, but people think that you’re exactly alike.

In no time at all we were laughing and talking. Then one of the brothers said, “I’m Nicholas, and this is my brother, Nathaniel. What’s your name?”

I gulped8), took a deep breath, and said, “I’m Chelsea Chowderhead,翻譯.”

“Chowder? Like the soup?” asked Nathaniel.

“Yes,” I replied, looking down and blushing. “Like a thick soup or stew.”

“Hey, cool. Do you and Claire want to come over after school and play basketball with us?” Nathaniel asked.

“I’d love to,” I said.

“Me too,” Claire agreed.

And that is how I learned to ask good questions and became friends with Nicholas and Nathaniel Noodlenoggin.

If you’ve always assumed that tomatoes are very nutritious, you’reabsolutely right. They’re a good source of lycopene 1 and beta-carotene 2, but consider this: if you eat a tomato without adding alittle fat, say a drizzle3 of olive oil, your body will not absorb allthese nutrients. Gregory Brown, who is now a professor of exercisescience, learned this the hard way. He is not a big fan of tomatoes, but back when he was in graduate school at Iowa State, he volunteeredfor a nutrition study, agreeing to eat big bowls of salad greens withtomatoes and dressing, all in exchange for a few hundred bucks. WhatBrown did not know at the time is that some of the salads had fat-freeor reduced-fat dressings, while othershad regular oil-based Italian, adistinction that turned out to be very significant. Researchers foundthat when people ate the fatfree salads, there was virtually noabsorption of the carotenoids4, like beta-carotene or lycopene. Studyauthor Wendy White says there are a few other ways to maximize theabsorption of these healthy compounds, namely by chopping and chewing, which breaks down the plant material。

Wendy White: The finer the particle size, themore finely chopped, or homogenized, or they probably chewed thecarrot, the better the absorption of the betacarotene。

Part Four: Monologue
The value of a home or apartment is affected by the neighborhood its in. If it’s a safe and wealthy neighborhood, with lots of conveniences, then prices will be pretty high. If it’s dangerous and far away from things like shopping and public transport, the price will be lower. Conveniences that people look for in cities include shopping centers, public transportation, parking, restaurants and nightlife, and if they have children, parks and schools. Most neighborhoods are safe, although there are some that can be dangerous, especially at night. Many young people who want to live in the city will often live in a more dangerous section to save money. This has helped poorer parts of cities in recent years, as young people bring money into the neighborhood.

Part Five: Vocabulary and Phrases

Winter seldom comes as a relief. But after the spring hose pipe ban that led, perhaps inevitably, to a summer and autumn of deluge and flood, this winter is indeed most welcome.

More importantly, there are a great many fruit and berry-eating birds around this winter. This is not because they had a great breeding season here – they didn't – but because a multitude has come over here from Scandinavia, where an even lousier spring produced even less for them.

And what are the best features of December weather? First and foremost, are the sunsets. Cold clear days will end with a blood-drained sun retreating slowly into a silent night of gathering frost, while grey days end with just a tint of pink in a lead-grey sky. Best of all are the days of stillness and quiet, which we seldom experience in summer – the embalmed stillness of midwinter air is something deeply wonderful, the world of nature seems truly asleep and at peace with itself.

Best of all, we have not had anything even remotely approximately to a summer since 2006,英文翻譯. 2012 was a nightmare. We are seriously overdue. Surely, then, we can look forward to the new year with relish,翻譯?
